What is an M’rirt rug?
The M’rirt, also written Mrirt, takes its name from a small town in the Middle Atlas, near Khénifra, at the heart of the Beni Mellal-Khénifra region. The weavers there work a long and lustrous mountain sheep’s wool, knotted at an exceptional density: that is what gives the M’rirt its velvet feel, its thickness and its weight. Undyed and restrained, or vibrating with color, it shares the spirit of the Beni Ouarain with an even deeper material. Many consider it the most luxurious of Berber rugs, and we agree. What sets the price of an M’rirt
Three factors: the density of the knotting (the more knots per square decimeter, the heavier and softer the piece), the quality of the wool and the size. In this collection, prices run from around €330 for the small formats to more than €1,800 for the very large and densest pieces, with most falling between €800 and €1,350. M’rirt or Beni Ouarain?
The Beni Ouarain is undyed, graphic, with thick wool and a slightly more rustic texture. The M’rirt is denser, heavier and softer, with wool that catches the light. At similar patterns, the M’rirt is the choice of comfort and longevity; the Beni Ouarain that of the drawing and the budget. Which room is it for?
Its thickness makes it the ideal rug for a living room or a bedroom, where you walk barefoot. A 200 x 300 cm structures a living room; a smaller format dresses the foot of a bed or a reading corner. Caring for an M’rirt
Its dense wool holds little dust: vacuuming once or twice a week, on low power and without a beater bar, is enough. A little shedding is normal in the first weeks. On a stain, blot without rubbing using a white cloth and a little Marseille soap, then let it dry flat. Our care guide covers the right moves.
Frequently asked questions about M’rirt rugs
Mrirt or M’rirt: which spelling is right?
You will see both. M’rirt keeps the Amazigh pronunciation with the apostrophe; Mrirt is the simplified form used on maps and websites. It is the same rug, the same region and the same wool.
Why is an M’rirt more expensive than a Beni Ouarain?
Because it holds more wool and more knots: the knotting is tighter, the wool longer and silkier, the piece heavier. At equal size, it asks the weaver for more weeks of work.
Is an M’rirt always undyed?
No. Traditional M’rirt are undyed with dark patterns, but the workshops of the region also knot solid or colorful pieces, from terracotta to blue, at the same density. The color filter on this page lets you see only the shades you like.
