What is a Berber rug?
A Berber rug is a wool rug hand-knotted or handwoven by the women of Morocco’s Amazigh tribes, in the villages of the Middle Atlas and the High Atlas. There is no single model but a family of styles, each tied to a region: the Beni Ouarain, in undyed wool crossed with black or brown diamonds; the Azilal, with bold colors and free-form patterns; the M’rirt, dense and velvety, the most luxurious of the three; the Boujad, in deep reds and pinks; the Boucherouite, woven from recycled fabric strips; the kilim, flat-woven, with no pile.
Diamonds, chevrons and broken lines are not decoration: they form a language passed from mother to daughter, where every sign stands for fertility, protection or the home. We go into it in our article on the meaning of Berber patterns.
How to choose your Berber rug
Three questions are enough to find the right piece: which style, which size, which color.
The style, so the tribe.
You are looking for clarity and restraint: look at our Beni Ouarain rugs, undyed and graphic. You want color and character: our colorful Berber rugs, mostly Azilal, are made for you. You dream of thickness and softness underfoot: our M’rirt rugs have the densest wool and the most velvety feel. The size, so the room.
A small Berber rug dresses an entryway, the foot of a bed or a bathroom. A medium-size rug suits a bedroom or a reading corner. The color, so the mood.
Cream and black for a calm atmosphere, multicolor for a lively room, terracotta, pink or blue for one precise accent: the color filter on this page shows only the pieces that suit you. Beni Ouarain stay within off-whites and browns; Azilal and M’rirt open up the whole palette.

How much does a Berber rug cost?
The price depends on the tribe, the size and the density of the knotting. In this collection, small rugs start around €180, half the pieces fall between €300 and €700, and the largest, densest M’rirt go beyond €1,500. All our prices are shown tax included. How do you tell a real Berber rug?
Turn it over: on the back, the knots are visible and slightly irregular, with no plastic backing and no glue. The wool feels warm and smells of wool, not of synthetic fiber. The patterns carry small asymmetries, the signature of handwork. Our anti-copy checklist goes through every point.
What is the difference between Beni Ouarain, Azilal and M’rirt?
The Beni Ouarain is undyed, with black or brown patterns, in thick and restrained wool. The Azilal is colorful, free in its patterns, often finer. How do you care for a wool Berber rug?
Vacuum once or twice a week on low power, without a beater bar, and do not vacuum the fringes. On a stain, blot without rubbing using a white cloth, a little water and Marseille soap, then let it dry flat. Avoid bleach, steam cleaners and any wash that soaks the wool. What size Berber rug for a living room?
200 x 300 cm is the reference size for a living room: the front legs of the sofa and the armchairs rest on the rug, which pulls the space together. 160 x 230 cm is enough in front of a single sofa, and a custom format solves unusual rooms. Our size guide gives the benchmarks for every room.
