What is an Azilal rug?
Azilal is a province of the central High Atlas, between Marrakech and Beni Mellal. In its valleys, village women have been weaving wool rugs for generations, meant first for their own home: a blanket, a bed, a wedding dowry. Unlike the Beni Ouarain, undyed and restrained, the Azilal is a rug that tells a story: diamonds, zigzags, crosses, silhouettes, every weaver composes without a template, as the loom goes, which gives asymmetrical drawings and pieces impossible to reproduce identically. The sheep’s wool is hand-spun then dyed, on a ground that is most often cream or off-white. The pile is medium-long, the thickness average: lighter than a Beni Ouarain, more supple than an M’rirt.
How to spot a real Azilal
Turn the rug over: on the back you should see the knots one by one and read the drawing in negative, with small irregularities. A perfectly even back or a glued weave gives away industrial production. The selvages are finished by hand, the fringes are the continuation of the warp, never sewn on. The colors shift slightly from one row to the next (dye baths are made in small quantities): those variations, called “abrash”, are a signature of handwork, not a flaw. Finally, an Azilal almost always has an elongated format, inherited from the width of village looms: between 1 m and 1.6 m wide for 2 to 3 m long. Choosing the size of your Azilal
The elongated format of the Azilal suits rooms that run long: a 100 x 200 cm dresses an entryway or a hallway, a 150 x 250 cm frames a bed or a sofa, a 170 x 300 cm structures a living room. Leave 20 to 30 cm of floor visible around the rug so that it can breathe. The small Azilal are perfect beside a bed or in front of an armchair; the extra-large formats belong in open living spaces. Caring for an Azilal rug
Azilal wool takes daily life very well: vacuum without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, once a week. On a stain, blot immediately with a damp cloth and lukewarm water, without rubbing; a little diluted Marseille soap is enough on greasy marks. No washing machine and no steam cleaner, which felt the wool, and no long exposure to full sun, which fades the colors. Turn the rug once or twice a year to even out the wear. Azilal, Beni Ouarain or M’rirt?
These three names stand for regions and styles, not for brands. The Azilal is the most graphic and the most colorful, with a medium-long pile. The Beni Ouarain, woven farther north in the Middle Atlas, is undyed, thick and patterned in restrained black: the choice of calm interiors. Is an Azilal rug thick?
Moderately: the pile is medium-long (2 to 3 cm), finer than a Beni Ouarain. It stays warm and comfortable while remaining easy to vacuum.
Do the colors of an Azilal bleed?
No, once the wool has been dyed and washed in Morocco, the colors are set. Simply avoid very hot water and full sun, which fade them over time.
Can you put an Azilal rug in a child’s room?
Yes, and it is a common choice: natural wool, cheerful patterns, and simple care with lukewarm water if a stain happens.
